Flora’s Walk Hamilton – A Day of Community, Connection & Care

This past weekend, I had the honour of photographing Flora’s Walk Hamilton… and it’s one of those events that stays with you long after you’ve packed up your camera. Not just because of the people, or the energy… but because of what it stands for.

Who Is Flora?

Flora’s Walk is named in memory of Flora, a Toronto mother who tragically lost her life in 2022 due to undiagnosed and untreated postpartum psychosis. Her story is deeply heartbreaking… but it has become the catalyst for something incredibly powerful. Flora’s Walk exists to honour her life – and to make sure no parent has to suffer in silence.

What Is Flora’s Walk?

Flora’s Walk is now Canada’s largest perinatal mental health fundraiser, with events taking place in communities across the country. Each May, during World Maternal Mental Health Month, people come together to:

  • Raise awareness around maternal and perinatal mental health

  • Fund support services for parents and families

  • Create space for connection, conversation, and support

It’s more than just a walk… it’s a movement rooted in compassion and care.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Stephanie

Hamilton’s walk was brought to life by my friend Stephanie Kolaski, founder of Internal Nesting Wellness. Steph is someone who pours so much into the families she supports… and it shows in everything she touches.

If you’re looking for support, resources, or simply someone who understands this season of life, I can’t recommend her work enough: https://www.internalnesting.ca/

The way this event came together felt intentional, welcoming, and deeply supportive. From the smallest details to the overall energy of the day, you could feel the care behind it all.

It’s not easy to hold space for something this important… but Steph did it beautifully.

The Heart of the Day

Hamilton showed up.

Families, friends, little ones in strollers… everyone came together with a shared purpose. There was a quiet understanding woven through the day – that while many smiles were present, this cause carries real weight.

And yet, the feeling wasn’t heavy.
It was hopeful.

There were hugs, conversations, moments of reflection… and also laughter, connection, and that feeling of being surrounded by people who get it.

What made the day feel so special wasn’t just the walk itself… it was everything surrounding it.

There were local resources available for families to connect with… spaces to ask questions, learn, and feel supported.

Little ones were running around enjoying activities, snacks in hand… while parents had the chance to pause, chat, and just be with people who understand this season of life.

There were raffles, food, and so many small touches that made the day feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone who showed up.

My Role Behind the Lens

As a photographer, I often talk about capturing connection… but days like this remind me why that matters so much. My role was simple: To document the day as it unfolded.

  • The in-between moments…

  • The hand squeezes…

  • The parents showing up for each other…

  • The children unknowingly at the centre of something so meaningful.

I approached the day quietly… observing, documenting, and letting the moments speak for themselves.

Why This Matters

Perinatal mental health touches more families than we often realize. Behind closed doors, many parents are navigating anxiety, depression, or overwhelming emotions during what is supposed to be a joyful time. Events like Flora’s Walk are changing that narrative. They are creating space for honesty… For support… For healing.

And for remembrance.

Final Thoughts

I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of Flora’s Walk Hamilton this year. To witness a community come together like this… to support, uplift, and advocate for one another… it’s something really specialAnd a special thank you again to Stephanie for leading something so meaningful for the Hamilton community.

Remember, you are not alone 🤍
